Who decides how this goes
Maternity photography is a recent tradition sitting inside much older ones, and in a multi-generational home those older ones tend to win.
That shows up in practical ways. What is worn, whether the bump is shown, which month is considered right, whether the session happens before or after a family ceremony — these get settled by the household, not by a photographer with a mood board.
Our job is to work inside that rather than push against it. A session that respects how a family does things produces photographs the family will actually display; one that ignores it produces a set nobody puts on a wall.
The upside is that these sessions are rarely rushed and rarely lonely. There is usually someone to help with a drape, hold a reflector, or simply keep the mother-to-be comfortable, and that changes the atmosphere for the better.
Maternity photography is a recent tradition sitting inside much older ones, and in a multi-generational home the older ones usually set the terms. What is worn, whether the bump is shown, which month is considered right — these get decided by the household rather than by a photographer.
Working inside that rather than against it is the whole job. A session that respects how the family does things produces photographs that go on a wall; one that ignores it produces a set nobody displays.
The compensation is that these sessions are rarely lonely or rushed. Somebody is always around to help, and the atmosphere is closer to an occasion than to an appointment.
There is a practical benefit to the household being involved. Somebody is always free to hold a drape, adjust a fall of fabric or simply keep the mother-to-be comfortable, which makes these sessions calmer than they are elsewhere.
It also means they rarely run to a strict clock. Sessions here tend to become part of the afternoon rather than an appointment inside it, and the photographs are better for the lack of hurry.
If the family marks the pregnancy formally, it is worth deciding whether the photographs sit before or after that. Both work and they produce noticeably different sets.
Getting ready
Settle what you are comfortable with before the day, and settle it with whoever in the family has views. A session where the household is at ease produces photographs the family will actually display.
Bring more than one option to wear, including something the elders would consider appropriate. It costs nothing to have both available and it removes the one conversation nobody wants mid-session.
If the session is at home, pick the room with the best daylight rather than the smartest one. Older houses often have one good window and it is rarely in the front room.
Planning it
Whether the family will be present and whether they should be in any of the frames. Both answers are common and they lead to quite different sessions.
What is considered appropriate in your household, because it is far easier agreed beforehand than negotiated in front of a camera.
And whether there is a ceremony around this. Many families here mark the pregnancy formally, and a maternity session sits differently before or after it.

How the session itself works is covered in full on the main maternity photography page.
Not at all, and it is a common request. Tell us what you are comfortable with before the session and we will plan the whole thing around it rather than negotiating on the day.
Yes. Partner, older children, mother and mother-in-law — whoever should be in it. Say so when you book so we allow the time.
Home works well when the light does, and it means relatives who cannot travel are included. The studio gives more control. Both are fine.
Yerawada, Kalyani Nagar, Koregaon Park, Wadgaon Sheri, Viman Nagar, Vishrantwadi and Tingre Nagar are closest, and we photograph across the rest of Pune.
A common request and easily planned for. Tell us what you are comfortable with beforehand and the whole session is built around it.

Involve them in the plan rather than presenting it afterwards. Sessions agreed by the household go better than sessions defended to it.
Most families photograph in the last third, but families vary and some mark it around a ceremony. Tell us what your household expects.
Yes, and plenty do. Tell us both dates and we will suggest which order works better.
The selected, edited set rather than a fixed number. Fewer strong frames beat a padded gallery.
Yes, and photographed early while their interest holds.
Yes, though it needs a particular half hour of the day. Tell us if it appeals.
Two or three outfit options, and anything with meaning to the family.
Often. Ask and we will tell you honestly what is open.
If the light where we are shooting works then, yes. Tell us the room or location and we will suggest an hour.
Tell us where and we will say honestly what is possible and what permissions might be needed.
Yes. Tell us and nothing is shared or displayed anywhere.
Then she should be. Tell us at booking and those frames are planned rather than added hurriedly at the end.
Yes, and plenty of families prefer it. Tell us which way the main room faces and we will suggest the hour.
That is normal here and it is workable. We use one room for the arranged frames and let the rest of the house carry on around it.
Including anything the family would rather we did or did not photograph. It is easier agreed beforehand.
