Nobody assesses a practice project by project. They scroll the whole portfolio in a couple of minutes and form a single impression of it.

Which means five projects photographed by five different people over ten years does not read as five projects. It reads as an inconsistent practice, and it drags good work down to the level of the weakest set in the sequence.

The fix is not better individual photographs. It is one consistent treatment applied across everything.

This matters more for architects than for most other professions, because the work itself is judged partly on rigour. A portfolio that looks assembled rather than authored undercuts exactly the quality the practice is trying to demonstrate.

The same approach to light, the same framing conventions, the same relationship to verticals, the same colour and tone across every project. Individually invisible; collectively the difference between a portfolio and a folder.

It also means the same decisions about people, about time of day, and about how much context is included. A portfolio where half the buildings are empty at dawn and half are full at noon does not hold together no matter how well each was shot.

Where a practice has a house style — a preference for people or their absence, for a particular kind of weather, for context or isolation — that gets established once and applied throughout rather than decided again on each shoot.

Older projects can be rephotographed, and it is often the highest-value work a practice can commission, because it lifts the whole sequence rather than adding one project to the end of it.

Buildings change, of course. Ten years of occupation, weathering and alteration mean an older project photographs as it is now rather than as it was handed over. Sometimes that is better — planting has matured and the building has settled into its site. Sometimes it means agreeing what can honestly be shown.

Publications, journals and competitions have specific requirements — resolution, colour space, aspect ratio, whether people may appear, and often a limit on how many images may be submitted.

Files are prepared to those standards, and it saves considerable trouble to know the target before the shoot rather than after. A frame composed without knowing it would need to crop to a fixed ratio usually crops badly.

Competition submissions are a different exercise again. They are read quickly, by people looking for a specific argument, and the image set has to make that argument in a defined number of frames.

That is worth planning as a set rather than assembling from existing photographs. Send the brief and the submission requirements, and the shoot can be built to answer them directly.

The same applies to award submissions and to journal features. Each has its own conventions about what may be shown and how, and none of them are difficult to work to when they are known in advance.
