Landscape work is far less about the moment of exposure than about everything preceding it. The photograph is largely decided by where you are standing and what time it is, and both of those are settled long before the day.

The hours around sunrise and sunset do most of the work, because low light has direction and colour and midday light has neither. A location that is unremarkable at noon can be worth the drive at six.

Which means the planning is the craft. Working out where the sun rises relative to a ridge, what the weather is likely to do, and how long it takes to get somewhere in the dark is the part that determines whether there is a photograph at all.

There is a great deal within reach — the ghats, the forts, the plateaus, the reservoirs and the hill country, all of which change character completely across the year.

The monsoon transforms the region, and the months after it are when the landscape is at its greenest and the waterfalls are running. The dry months give harder light, clearer air and a different, sparer kind of subject. Neither is better; they suit different work.

For a specific location or a specific condition, timing is everything and it is worth planning months rather than weeks ahead.

Landscape work fails more often than it succeeds, and that is normal rather than a sign of anything going wrong. The cloud arrives, the light does not, the mist that made the location worth visiting has burned off by the time you get there.

The honest position is that a specific image at a specific location sometimes takes several visits. Anyone promising a guaranteed result from one trip to a mountain is describing something other than landscape photography.

That is worth saying plainly before a commission rather than afterwards, because it affects how the work should be planned and how many days are sensible to allow.

Landscape work is often destined for a wall rather than a screen, which changes how it has to be captured and processed. Large prints show everything: noise, softness, over-processing, and any corner where detail was not held.

So images are shot and processed with print sizes in mind rather than optimised for a phone. If you already know the size and the medium — paper, canvas, metal, backlit — say so, because they behave differently and the processing follows from the choice.
