An engagement is usually the first function a photographer covers for a couple, and it sets the tone for everything after it. It is also the shortest — the part everyone came for often lasts under a minute, and there is no second attempt at it.

That is the whole argument for planning it properly rather than treating it as a warm-up. Tell us the running order, who is speaking, and roughly when the rings come out, and we will be standing in the right place instead of moving into it.

Engagements also run late more often than any other function, so we plan for a schedule that drifts. A photographer who has budgeted for the ceremony starting on time and nothing else is the one standing in the wrong corner when it finally does.

We cover the exchange itself closely — hands, faces, and the reactions from the front row, which is usually where the photograph families end up printing comes from.

Lighting at an engagement is rarely ideal. Stages are lit for the audience rather than for a camera, and halls mix daylight with whatever the venue has installed. We work with that rather than firing flash into the middle of the ceremony, which ruins the moment for everyone actually attending it.

The formal family groups are the reason a lot of people came, and they are the first thing to get lost once food is served. We do them while everyone is still in one room, working from a list you give us beforehand.

Write that list down rather than trusting the day to it. Ten names on paper is the difference between a complete set and finding out a week later that an uncle nobody could locate never appeared in a single frame.

We arrive early and photograph the stage, the decor, the seating and the styling while it is still exactly as it was set up. Once guests arrive those frames are gone, and whatever the decor cost, it deserves recording.

Detail frames — the rings, the invitations, the flowers, the sweets — are shot in the same window, when there is time to do them carefully rather than between two other things.

Most couples book the engagement and the wedding together, and it is worth doing. The same team covering both means one style across the whole set, and it means we already know your families by the time the wedding arrives.

It also makes the wedding day easier. You will have been photographed by us once already, which does more for how you look on camera than any amount of advice beforehand.

If you only want the engagement covered, that is fine too. Say so and we will quote it on its own.

Either way, book it as early as you can. Engagement dates cluster around the same auspicious days, which means several couples are often looking for the same photographer on the same evening.
