Getting everyone in one frame, without the fight
The hard part of family photography is not the camera. It is getting four, six or ten people looking in the same direction at the same moment while the youngest has decided they are finished.
We plan around that rather than fight it. Sessions are paced so younger children stay interested, group frames are done while everyone is fresh, and the unposed moments in between usually turn out to be the photographs families actually keep.
Groups, pairs and everyone in between
A family session is rarely one photograph repeated. Alongside the full family frame we work through the combinations — parents together, siblings, each child alone, grandparents with grandchildren — because those are the ones that end up on other people’s walls.
Tell us the group size and who you want photographed together when you enquire. Ten minutes of planning beforehand saves twenty minutes of organising on the day, and it means nobody important gets missed.
Studio, or somewhere you already like
The studio in Wadgaon Sheri gives controlled light and a clean, classic result, and it is entirely weather-proof. For families with small children it also means no walking, no traffic and no surprises.
Outdoors gives something more relaxed, especially if there is a park or a spot in Pune your family already uses. If you go outdoors, the hour or two before sunset gives the softest light and is worth planning the session around.
Coordinating outfits without matching
Coordinated rather than matching is the rule that holds up best. A family in identical outfits reads as a uniform; a family in tones that sit together reads as a family. Solid colours and simple textures photograph better than busy prints, which pull the eye away from faces.
Pick one or two colours and let everyone work within them. If you are unsure, send us what you are considering before the day and we will tell you what will work.
Grandparents and multi-generation sessions
The frames that matter most in a family session are often the ones with three generations in them, and they are the hardest to arrange because everyone is rarely in the same city on the same weekend. If you are planning around a visit, book early and tell us the dates you are working with.
Older relatives are photographed first, seated and comfortable, before the session moves on. Standing for a long stretch is not what makes a good portrait and there is no reason to ask anyone for it.
We work through the combinations deliberately — grandparents with all the grandchildren, then with each family in turn, then the full group. It takes a few extra minutes and it is the part nobody regrets afterwards.
These are also the photographs most likely to be printed. If there is a frame you already know you want enlarged, mention it during the session and we will shoot it with that in mind.
