The first question on a commercial job is not what to photograph but where the photographs are going. A website hero, a print advertisement, a profile banner and an app store screenshot each want different crops, different negative space and different framing, and a set shot without knowing that will need reworking.

Send the layouts, the wireframes, or even a rough sketch. We shoot to the crops you actually need, with room where text is going to sit, so the images drop into place instead of being fought with.

It is also worth saying what you do not need. A shoot that tries to cover a website, a campaign and a recruitment drive in one afternoon usually does none of them properly, and it is cheaper to say so at the planning stage than to reshoot.

A set of headshots is only useful if it looks like a set: the same lighting, background, crop and treatment, so a leadership page reads as one company rather than as eight photographers over six years.

That consistency has to be built into the shoot. We set up once and run everyone through it, and we keep the setup recorded so the person who joins four months later can be added without the page falling apart.

Most companies need more than portraits. Office space, people working, the process behind whatever you sell — these are the images that fill an about page, a careers page and a deck, and they are the ones most businesses discover they are missing.

They also date more slowly than portraits do, which makes them a better use of a shoot day than another round of headshots.

Where people appear in these frames, get their agreement in advance. It is a small piece of admin that avoids having to cut your best workspace photograph because someone in the background would rather not be on the careers page.
