Fashion covers a very wide range of work, and the same day can be spent producing entirely different things. A designer needs the garments documented. A model needs a portfolio that gets them cast. A brand needs images that fit a campaign that already exists.

Those pull in different directions. Garment work wants the clothes readable and the styling neutral enough not to distract. Portfolio work wants range — different lighting, different moods, evidence that somebody can do more than one thing. Campaign work wants consistency with whatever came before it.

So the first conversation is about what the images are for, not about locations or looks. Everything after that follows from it.

On garment-focused work the clothes have to stay the subject, and that constrains almost every decision. Lighting has to show cut, drape and texture rather than create atmosphere at their expense. Poses have to let the garment sit properly. Backgrounds have to stay out of the way.

Colour accuracy matters more here than in almost any other kind of portrait work. A customer ordering from an image is ordering the colour they can see, and a garment that photographs two shades off is a return rather than a stylistic choice.

Consistency across the range matters just as much. A lookbook where every piece was lit slightly differently reads as a collection of photographs rather than as a collection.

A portfolio is judged on range and on whether the person in it can be cast. That means variety built in deliberately — different lighting, different framing, a clean beauty frame and a full-length, something commercial and something with more character.

It also means at least one very plain, honestly lit frame with minimal styling. Casting directors want to see what somebody actually looks like, and a portfolio composed entirely of heavily styled images makes that harder rather than easier.

Bring more options than you think you need. Selecting on the day from a rail is far easier than discovering at the third look that everything reads the same.

Studio gives control, repeatability and no weather. It suits garment work, beauty frames and anything where the treatment has to stay identical across a long set.

Location gives context and a sense of a world around the clothes, and it suits editorial and lifestyle-led work. It also costs time — travel between spots, changing facilities, and light that does not wait.

On retouching, it is worth agreeing the level before the shoot. Garment work usually wants clean, faithful images with distractions removed and the colour true. Beauty and portfolio work sits on a spectrum, and the honest position is that a portfolio which does not look like the person is working against them at the casting.
