A birthday works best when the photographer is barely noticed. We move through the celebration documenting what is actually happening — the guests arriving, the games, the cake, the reactions — rather than assembling a queue of posed photographs while the party waits.
We step in briefly for the group portraits, because those are the ones that get printed and nobody organises them without prompting. Then we go back to staying out of the way.
The decor, before it disappears
Whatever you have spent on the setup deserves photographing before fifty people walk into it. We arrive early and cover the decor, the cake table, the balloons and the styling while everything is still exactly as you arranged it.
It is worth ten minutes of your running order. After the first guests arrive those frames are gone for good.
First birthdays, cake smashes and themed setups
First birthdays get their own treatment. A studio cake smash session — a set, a cake, and a baby given permission to make a mess of it — is a different piece of work to covering a party, and many families do both: the studio session a week or two before, then coverage on the day.
Themed setups are built around whatever you have planned. Tell us the colours and the theme when you book and we will plan the set to match rather than working around it afterwards.
At home, at a venue, or in the studio

Home parties are usually the warmest and the trickiest to light: smaller rooms, mixed lighting and furniture that stays where it is. Venues give more room but often less daylight. Either way, tell us the venue and the schedule when you enquire and we will plan the coverage around both.
Photo, video, or both
A birthday is one of the few celebrations where video genuinely earns its place. A reel, a highlight film or full coverage can run alongside the photography, and the two are planned together so that neither gets in the other’s way.
Decide before the day rather than on it. Video needs a second pair of hands at a busy party and it changes where we stand during the cake and the games, so tell us when you enquire and we will plan the coverage properly instead of improvising.
If all you want is a short reel for social media, say so. That is a much lighter piece of work than a full film and it should be planned as such rather than bundled in by default.
Either way the photographs stay the priority. Video is an addition to the coverage, not a substitute for it, and we will say so if the two are competing for the same moment.
