What actually happens at a cake smash session
The set is built before you arrive, so nothing eats into your baby’s patience. When you get here we take a few minutes to let them settle — a new room, new lights and a stranger with a camera is a lot at twelve months old.
We photograph the clean frames first: your baby on the set, then with you, then any siblings. Those are almost always the images that end up printed and framed, and doing them before the cake means nobody is covered in buttercream for the family portrait.
Then the cake goes down and we stop directing. Some babies go straight in with both hands. Some poke it once and look at you for permission. Some cry. We keep shooting through all of it, because the honest reaction is the point of the session and a staged smash never looks like anything.
Themes, colours and the cake itself
Most families arrive with a colour or a theme in mind — something that matches the birthday party, or simply colours that suit the baby. Tell us what you have planned when you book and we will build the set to fit rather than the other way round.
On the cake, the practical advice is this: a soft sponge with a thick buttercream finish smashes well and photographs well. Fondant looks lovely and does not give, which makes for a frustrated baby and a dull set of photographs. If your baby has any allergy or dietary restriction, tell us beforehand.
The mess, and who deals with it
This is the question every parent asks, and the answer is: not you. Cleaning up after a cake smash is our problem. Bring a change of clothes for your baby and a towel if you like, and leave the rest of it to us.
It is worth dressing your baby in something you do not mind losing. Buttercream and food colouring do not always come out, and worrying about an outfit mid-session takes the fun out of it for everyone.

Bring a change of clothes, whatever your baby drinks, and a favourite toy if there is one that reliably settles them. If you want a specific outfit in the clean frames before the cake, bring that too and we will shoot it first.
